Penny earns her name: Pennies removed from duck

A domestic mallard brought to IBRRC in January had pennies removed from its gastrointestinal tract.

Jay Holcomb of IBRRC explains how “Penny” the duck was successfully treated by our staff and veterinarian at our bird rescue center in Northern California.

She was released last week.

Great ending to a story that had a sad beginning. So glad she's well and out of the hospital.

    AWWWWWW.

I really cringe when I see people throwing pennys and other change into any constructed body of water. Such a strange compulsion: not only are people wasting money, they are potentially hurting wildlife!

Thank you IBRRC for being so awesome.

I love wildlife and it makes me sick to my stomach to see people harm them! That was an extremely wonderful save that you have done. I like to see things like, but too often, one sees the bad that happens to wildlife. Keep up the great work and it looks like she is thrilled and ready to be with her new friends!

iT'S PITIFUL THAT PEOPLE USE OUR WATERS (OCEANS, LAKES ETC) AND EVEN CONSTRUCTION SIGHTS FOR DISPOSAL OF PENNIES AND GARBAGE. MAYBE THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF CONTAINER TO DEPOSIT PENNIES OR OTHER COINS AND WE CAN USE THAT MONEY FOR WILDLIFE CARE.

What a heartwarming story. Unfortunately I am on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and facing the onslaught of the oil spill and its travesty on our wild life. Please pray for our wildlife. Penny, you are one rockin' mallard!!!!!

This was a very interesting story. Glad the the duck survived thanks to some very dedicated people. Everyone should be very careful not to do anything to harm wildlife. I agree with the person who said the money should be donated for care of other animals. We should do everything we can to take care of all the creatures on the planet. We should also do everything we can to save our planet. Please do not litter!!!!
